To meet increased sewer demands and reduce sanitary sewer overflows, the City of Columbia, through its Clean Water 2020 program, is making improvements to the wastewater system. Residents throughout Columbia and its neighboring areas may be affected. To keep you informed, project updates will be posted on the basin pages as information becomes available.

Broad River

With over 60 miles of force main and gravity sewer, four pump stations, and 1,600 manholes, this basin area runs along the Broad River and the Harbison State Forest and serves customers in portions of St. Andrews and Harbison.

Crane Creek

Encompassing the neighborhoods of Belmont, Denny Terrace, Hollywood Hills, Fairfield Terrace, and Lincolnshire, Crane Creek has over 230 miles of force main and gravity sewer, six pump stations, and 5,547 manholes.

Gills Creek

Neighbors from communities such as East Lake, Hampton Park, Old Woodlands, Lake Katherine, South Kilbourne, and Shandon make up the Gills Creek basin which has over 270 miles of force main and gravity sewer, nine pump stations, and 6,138 manholes.

Mill Creek

Bordering Fort Jackson on Leesburg Road, this basin brings together Caughman Road Park, Galaxy, Lower Richland, and Mountain Brook; just to name a few. It has over 76 miles of force main and gravity sewer, four pump stations, and 1,701 manholes.

Rocky Branch

Several of Columbia’s oldest neighborhoods make up the Rocky Branch basin which reaches from downtown to Olympia and Shandon to Arthurtown. It has over 145 miles of force main and gravity sewer, seven pump stations, and 3,080 manholes.

Saluda River

Extending to Lake Murray at Pine Island and into Irmo’s Seven Oaks neighborhood, the Saluda River basin has over 200 miles of force main and gravity sewer, 18 pump stations, and 5,668 manholes.

Smith Branch

Beginning just near the banks of the Congaree River and stretching northeast along I-277 the Smith Branch basin encompasses Palmetto Health Richland, Earlewood Park, and the Eau Claire community. It has over 100 miles of force main and gravity sewer, one pump stations, and 2,680 manholes.

West Columbia

The West Columbia basin reaches from the Saluda River banks near Radio Lane to the Congaree at Knox Abbott Drive and also spans the area to the banks of the Broad River. It has over 25 miles of force main and gravity sewer, two pump stations, and 669 manholes.
