A Program Of The

City Of Columbia

With the historic Columbia Canal and Elmwood Cemetery, the Crane Creek basin runs through Riverfront Park along the banks of the Congaree River and stretches to the northeast along I-77. Reducing sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) continues to be major concern for this area. Since 2009 when Crane Creek saw an average of 82 SSOs per year, these occurrences have declined to 25 as of July 2018. A major improvement as a result of recent upgrades.
Columbia Canal: 2nd Annual Summer Celebration of Water (2011)

Due to an urgent need, the City rehabilitated Columbia Canal Bypass Lines and replaced bypass pumps monitored by a specialized computer system that instantly detect any anomalies and alert staff to act if required. Emergency planning and notification is key in this area as this section of sewer outfall serves one third of the City’s sewer customers and carries a large volume of flow.
