Sanitary Sewer Overflows Increase at Year’s End

In December 2015, the Wastewater Collection and Transmission System experienced 21 Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) events. Fifteen of these SSOs were the result of wet weather events, while six occurred during dry weather. From July through December 2015 (FY15/16), the total number of SSOs was 83. In comparison, only 51 SSOs were logged for the same 6 months in 2014 (FY14/15). This is a net increase of 32 SSOs. The total number of SSOs per 100 miles of pipe for the City of Columbia is approximately 7.55.

As of December 2015 (FY15/16), total SSO estimated volume equaled 5,057,862 gallons. In comparison, a total SSO estimated volume December 2014 (FY14/15) equaled 882,025. This is a net increase of 4,175,837 gallons.
